Re. emic/etic, poor cathexys has been listening to me rant about this kind of distinction ceaselessly for the past couple of months. Heh. Social science (esp. medical anthropology) often tackles this sort of thing, but I think it tends to go missing from the fananalysis discourse quite regularly.
