Meaker writes about her relationship with the novelist Patricia Highsmith (author of STRANGERS ON A TRAIN and THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY, among many others), and one of the things that struck me most was that they had to make their lunch dates depending on their clothing, because there were restaurants that refused to serve women who were wearing pants.
