flu-like symptoms, smoking astronauts, and a birthday

My computer -- the laptop that is -- remains dead or at any rate well past pining for the fjords. It couldn't go into the shop this weekend because the shop is not open on the weekends, and it can't go in tomorrow as I will have to be on campus from 8:30 in the morning until 10:30 at night.

Tomorrow, that is to say, will be a high-energy day. This is a pity as I will have no energy because I have another goddamn cold, the third in three months. What the hell? Is this just a normal part of aging, that one day you have a functional immune system and the next day you do not? I was always a strong and healthy person, physically anyway, and all my ailments were always joint and muscle troubles from too much exercise of the wrong varieties. Now I get colds all the time! and not just mild colds either. This one has me running the opposite of a fever. Seriously, at one point this afternoon my temperature was 96.9. Another possibility, more bracingly, is that I am already dead and just cooling off slowly. Or perhaps I became a vampire at some point and it just slipped my mind? (This is possible. It's been a very busy couple of months.) I'd enjoy that, I think. Grr. Argghh.

On a cheerier note, here's a link to video of William Shatner singing Rocket Man, with a cigarette.

And the cheeriest of all notes: It's the birthday of the Two-Toed Sloth! Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] twotoedsloth, you excellent mammal you!

Is that a Moomin in your icon?

I like the sound of that phrase. Clause. Whatever.

I am sorry you are not feeling well. :(

Yes! a Moomin. I love Moomintroll. And this here is ... I forget. Another Tove Jannson creature at any rate.

That's the 1977 Saturn Awards, which I watched in syndication. All I could think was "Captain Kirk SMOKES?????"

Indeed.

(Okay, couldn't resist that. What I meant to say was, wow, how cool that you know that! and yes, that was my thought too, thirty years later. Well, that, and also: open flame on a spaceship! Wow, terrible idea!)

I love people smoking in space. I think it's pretty awesome- it's just so crazy. Like Doc Kottel on BSG. Hey, no dumber than artificial gravity and no seat belts.

On the immune front, as a life long victim of heinous colds etc, sometimes you need to put everything on the back burner for a while and concentrate on building up the immune system. Lots of rest, healthy food, little stress. Oh, you can do that right now? Hm. Well, lately, when I know I'll be facing cats etc, I do a thing called "immune system boot camp" (by me. No one else would say anything that dorky.) Which also involves plenty of sleep leading up the event, and good food, and drinking lots of Airborne (which is expensive but effective; NB, "pink grapefruit" is by far the least odious flavor). Also lots of loratadine and nasalchrom in advance, but that won't help you.

Point is, making a concerted effort to help your immune system, with rest and substances, really can turn it around.

/preaching. Smooches- I will try to call again next weekend.

Sorry about the cold-a-thon and computer struggles, and hope you feel better soon!

Here's Sun Si Miao to send you good healing Qi *

Thank you! I am a bit better this morning already! (And how are you doing?)

Here I am visiting livejournal. I hope your laptop can be quickly fixed - sorry to hear it's pining. Did you ever hear that apocryphal Monty Pythonecdote about John Cleese spending hours at a story meeting insisting that his story about returning a toaster was funny, and it just wasn't working for anyone else, until Graham Chapman (who'd been lying on a sofa with a hangover or something) said, "oh, for god's sake, just make it a parrot."

Also sorry that you have a cold. You know, I remember another time - this was a couple of winters back, I think, when you were running the opposite of a fever and claimed to be dead & cooling off slowly. So at least you're consistent. AND, if the cooling process really did start a year or two again, at least it is progressing very very slowly. But ... I do hope you're feeling better soon.

Hah! no, I hadn't heard that story. It's a good one!

And hmmm, do you suppose repeating my own dumb jokes is a flu symptom? Or ... maybe ... that's what vampires do. Yeah, that's it! I'm sure Spike would do that!

No fangs yet, but it's early days yet. I *am* frighteningly pale already and also wanting to sleep all day. Yep, I'm a vampire.

How are you doing?

Thank you... also glad that you are feeling better. Actually, I often have a below normal temp when I am about to get sick, or have been sick. Actually... when else would you take your temperature. Maybe you are always below so called normal!
