in which I am initiated into a local ritual

So middle-class people who have lived in this part of the world for more than a generation all seem to do the same thing - they have weekend places, invariably known as "cottages," two or three hours away near or on a lake, and they spend as much time as possible there during the summers. I've never been to one of these before but in a few hours will be joining a few colleagues at another colleague's cottage for a couple of days (this cottage-owning colleague is actually first-generation Canadian, like me, but her ex is from a local family with deep roots here, and I suspect it was his first.) If you promise not to break the internet while I'm gone, I promise to tell you all about it when I return.

The weird thing is, growing up in Ohio, having a summer place, or a weekend place, however small, put you way the hell above "middle class" and into upper middle class.

I went to a friend's vacation getaway (though they call it a "shack", not a "cottage", and it is on a creek rather than a lake) last weekend, and liked it lots.

Haha, I think my new house is somebody else's summer cottage!

Also: when I lived in Minnesota, everybody had a summer cottage on the lake, it seemed like.

Alas, we live well more than 2-3 hours away from the cottage. And given the amenities/location, it's less than "cottage", and commonly referred to as "camp". It has a full kitchen, running hot and cold water, indoor plumbing, and electric heat -- but yeah, camp.

Canadians. *g*

Sorry about that! posted now. We're still missing two others, I think? So I won't report our points ...

We've got one voluntary drop out for the week, but we're still missing one. I usually pester in the mornings on Monday but I forgot today.

I really appreciate the pestering! Thank you!
