two unrelated items (and hello, I am posting twice in one day for the first time since January 2006)

First: Okay, you can come back now: all the picture links in this post seem to be working now, and as a bonus I got them all turned around the right way and everything.

Second: A student just told me that he heard that the University of Regina's English department has, after much discussion, allowed a creative writing student to propose to submit a long work of HP fanfic as her MFA thesis project. Apparently the issue within the department was whether or not they could accept a thesis that could not be published - otherwise, everyone was okay with it. This is very interesting, if true, but I'm even more interested that I heard nothing about it earlier. Did you all know about this already, aca-fen?

HP fanfic as a thesis project? I want it, too!

*pouts*

*is curious too*

I'll keep my ears open and see if I hear any more about it ...

That is interesting! I wonder how she presented it and what she's using as her framework. I know a number of departments are taking fanfic very seriously these days.

I know lots of cult stud/communications/literary studies programs are taking fans and fanfic seriously these days, but this is the first I've heard of a work of fanfiction itself being proposed as an MFA thesis in a creative writing program, and I still don't quite believe it ...

I had not heard that, and am intrigued and would like to hear more. Our dept. is creating a certificate (internal thing, 18 hours allows one to teach AP/Dual credit and community college in Texas, and so we're creating a certificate, but that's a step toward a larger program, YAY new dept head).

A thesis that could not be published--well, wipe off a few serial numbers! I imagine very few creative writing theses are published *as is.*! If that was their main objection--wow. I know a number of creative writing departments forbid any popular genre writing period, especially sf/fantasy.

I'd like to hear more too, but that's all I got.

Wow - I had not heard about that! I'll have to check that out.

Well, let me know what you find, please ... right now this is just something I heard from a student, so who knows how accurate it really is?
