the internet is for ... is for .... it's for something, anyway

I'm on dial-up until laptop returns to me (the service people haven't even called back with a diagnosis yet, after a full week, which is Not A Good Sign) and also am busier than I have ever been before in my whole busy life. Yet I still am doing my share of random clicking around. Or slightly more than my share. So this was the fruit of my random clicking this morning:

Did you know that Fiona Apple's (shut up, I like "Extraordinary Machine") brother is the actor who played the cop's sidekick/hippie anthropologist on "The Sentinel"?

Yeah, you knew that already, plus long ago you wrote some very kinky RPF about the whole family, including ironic observations about how every actor/media person in the world (or at least New York and environs) has worked on Days of Our Lives at least once.

So send me the link already, okay?

eta I'm sure I'll be sorry that I asked, but who is this Ken Wahl of whom you tell me?

*g* I think most of fandom knew this ... okay, the part of Fandom that followed Sentinel, which is probably *not* most of fandom anymore ...

Given that Garrett Maggart (and I'm spelling this without looking it up, always dangerous...) didn't do much other than Sentinel, I think some RPF would be interesting. Rumor has it they are half-siblings and didn't grow up together, which makes it even more... incestering?

*smirk*

And not only does the fanfic exist, but MMWD (see her comment below) has already read it. I love the internet! and fandom! and TV shows I've never even seen!

Off topic, I watched Nacho Libre (except for the end, which didn't seem to want to get watched, at least not on that machine). Um... I didn't think it seemed all that referencial to the classic lucha films. Did you? Or did I misunderstand what you were saying. Anyway, I think that even though I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, it was still another piece of... not so much lucha libre as kitsch.. but Mexico as Kitschland. (Kitschland Kitschland über alles?). Although I loved the sidekick guy. Also... incidently... "Ramses," who is listed in the credits as El Bronco, is really Silver King (brother of Dr. Wagner Jr), who had been fighting in Japan and Mexico as Black Tiger (for whatever reason). But yeah, yeah... real luchadores... yeah yeah Mexico (except that last time I was in Oaxaca City, nobody could tell me where to see lucha libre).

So what did you think really?

P.S. Finished the conclusion, and I kind of like it for now.

[livejournal.com profile] brooklinegirl writes crack (gennish, I think?) about the family and some guy named Ken Wahl. Check out her "Garretverse" tag - it's VERY WEIRD.

Definitive proof that you cannot imagine the thing that fandom has not already written about, held the Fuh-Q-Fest for, kerfuffled upon, sporked, wanked over, and moved on. It is simply beyond the power of the human brain to Get There First. Fandom is the Eye of Sauron, and we are all just poor hobbits scuttling about on the cracked prosaic plains of Mordor.

[identity profile] lolaraincoat.livejournal.com 2007-01-28 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. Hobbits. Say, I bet there's some fanfic out there somewhere for that ....

Seriously, last summer I was trying to explain to a friend about fanfic and fandom and how there is fanfic for everything so I googled Barbar fanfic but there was none to be found which was odd but explicable by the fact that I had misspelled Babar's name. Because really there's a smallish but not non-existant amount.

Oh my god I love fandom. And you. And Brooklinegirl. I don't even know her, but I love her anyway.

And now I have to go have Serious Professional Dinner meeting with a straight face. Yikes!

[identity profile] norah.livejournal.com 2007-01-28 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
did you read it, or are you just cracking up at the IDEA?

Dude! My profession has rendered me incapable of merely imagining what a story might be when I can look at the original text. So yeah, I read through about half the entries in her memories there, and they are the good crack, you bet.

Ken Wahl is of Wiseguy fame - Vinnie Terranova, who was a federal agent who went undercover with the mob & such, wore leather & a bad attitude, and people swooned in the late 80s over him. [livejournal.com profile] astolat singlehandedly created a (small) Wiseguy fandom last year.

Ah! Thank you! that adds a new dimension to [livejournal.com profile] brooklinegirl's very cracky crackfic (I recommend it; there are Funyons (tm) and no actual incest) on the whole wacky family.

At the risk of sounding like TOTAL asshole, while many soaps are filmed in NYC, DooL isn't one of them- like General Hospital, it shoots in LA.

One of those things that I will, unfortunately, always know.

[identity profile] lolaraincoat.livejournal.com 2007-02-02 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
So it's true! Just as I've always suspected! You do know everything!

A weird 20-year-old Russian girl who was trying to do a glamor tour of NYC gushingly told me the same thing a few months ago, to my immense amusement and B's intense annoyance. I think what I knew was ...how to get back to the subway or where to get a bite to eat or something.

Anyway, no, I know way too embarrassingly much about soaps. Unless you ask suzanne_laura and co, in which case I'm a rank amateur. But how did DooL end up in the picture, anyway? Was Fiona Apple on it? And what's wrong with Fiona Apple, anyway, that thou woulds't disown her?

[identity profile] lolaraincoat.livejournal.com 2007-02-02 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
Where to get food IS everything to a hungry person. For instance a hungry glamorous Russian tourist person.

Pretty much everyone involved in The Sentinel, plus Ken Wahl (I think Ken Wahl) also had played minor roles (I think minor) on DooL. But not Fiona Apple as far as I can see. (Thanks, IMDB!)

And nothing wrong with Fiona Apple from my POV but my hipster-ish grad student sniggered when she found me listening to some in my office one day, and I took that to heart.
