Laptop blackouts may be caused by a faulty backlight, which can be repaired, but generally isn't worth the cost if it's an old one and not under warranty. If it is the backlight, you should be able to connect the laptop to an external monitor if you have one lying around, and not get the blackouts anymore. Could be a useful stopgap measure until your school makes with the computer-giving.
