According to a conversation I had yesterday with elspethdixon, who specialized in post-Civil War Southern history in college, she did a lot of looking into patterns of segregation in the US and in New York City they did not, in fact, have segregated public drinking fountains. Or officially segregated public anything. Unofficial or private segregation might be a different matter, but... Make of this what you will.
