Thanks for this. I think the crucial issues were segregation by unit - Marvel-verse aside, in real life there were no integrated units - and perhaps even more importantly from the point of view of the US military in 1945, maintenance of a white command structure (eg white guys could command non-white guys, but not vice versa.)
