Ah, you inspired me to do a little research. 2008 share of immigrants in NYC population = ~35%. 1940 share of immigrants in NYC population = ~30%. So yes, clearly more immigrants in New York now than in 1940. (On the other hand, 1910 share of immigrants in NYC population = 40%, which is pretty impressive, but still not close to Buenos Aires at the same time, or Toronto right now, both over 50%, but this is a total digression, I <3 demographic history so much.)
