it would seem to me a writer should be free to chose the "history" which precedes what he/she is writing. as long as he makes this clear of course.
I agree to a certain point, but if a writer wants his or her story to be believable, they need to take certain things into account. If, to use your example, Constantine had not rewritten history to suit his needs, that would change a huge swath of history. If the Americas that European settlers entered had never been populated by humans, things would have changed accordingly. (Good luck finding something to eat, kids!)
