Yes, I think I should read Walton as a summer project. As for Turtledove, I think he was either an ABD or PhD from UCLA in Byzantine history (or something similar), but he writes speculative fiction that is often a historical AU from all sorts of periods. The ones I've liked were classical or Byzantine.
