I think that having any comfort in this world, if you live with political or economic or race-based privilege, pretty much requires this kind of ignorance. Otherwise we have to see that we walk through ghosts and over bones, all the time and everywhere.
Of course, this kind of remark explains why historians don't get invited to a lot of parties.
