lolaraincoat: (tomato)

It was too beautiful a day to go to the gym so instead I left work early and went to the garden center, where just as I hoped, the heirloom tomato plants had arrived. So I spent two hours digging holes, pulling weeds, and hauling sand and sheep manure - and probably got as much exercise as I would have on the elliptical trainer.

So, the tomatoes:

Earliana (2)
Black Prince
Glamour (4, not heirloom, but reliable and tasty)
Black Zebra (2)
Green Zebra (2)
Yellow Pear
Rainbow
Feurwerkes (2)

and one purple tomatillo. Purple!

Other food-type planting so far:

~ herbs, all in place except for some basil I'm growing from seed that's still in pots

~ red cabbage, as an experiment

~ 4 kinds of onion

~ rhubarb, probably about ready to pick

~ apricots

~ figs - maybe this year they'll ripen before the frost, maybe they won't

~ sweet potato vine - I'm not counting on it producing, but it will be pretty

~ lettuces and arugala

~ chard

~ beets

~ sugar snap peas

~ the horrible, eternal grapes of doom

~ strawberries

So that should be it for the year except for maybe some more tomatoes (no, seriously, if I see any Oxheart for sale, I'm putting in two or three of those) and the chiles, of course.

Do you think there might be a prize for most boring lj entry of the week? Because I think that this post might be a serious contender.

OM NOM NOM.

I have been womanfully restraining myself from posting about my mild health woes and how I just discovered that baja style fish tacos can be made with fish sticks. Otherwise I would be in the running, let me tell you. I coulda been a contender.

not boring at all! in fact, this post is mildly jealousy-inducing. i wish i had actual ground to plant things in. i do have two nice big sunny balconies, but summer is when my grad student budget dries up and tomato plants become a ridiculous luxury item. just keep posting so i can live vicariously, 'kay?

You can eat sweet potato greens, even if they don't produce tubers. :) Very nice sauteed w/garlic.

I'm so glad I actually got to experience your garden for myself, and when it was near peak. I've always loved reading about it. I think garden writing is a special kind of porn for me in my tiny Manhattan apartment.

But I'm still giving my vote for best tomato variety name this year to [Unknown site tag]'s Mr. Stripey.

Fish sticks?!? I'm so stealing that idea.

Our redwood tree-dominated backyard is too shady for much vegetable garden action. (And I'm too lazy, truth be told, to properly nurture one even if I had the space.) Nevertheless, I have annual yearnings for a big, lavish victory garden that are vicariously satisfied, at least in part, by reading YOUR gardening entries. Thank goodness, because otherwise, think of the plants I'd be forced to torture!

Wait, how come I'm the only one here without a vegetable icon?

trader Joe's makes Cod Sticks that are better than the standard fare. That, some thinly sliced cabbage, some tomato, and some (gah!) thousand island dressing...I added pre-seasoned black beans, too. I'm a Philistine, but dinner only took fifteen minutes to make and included all food groups, so whatever.

Garden posts are never boring! I love spending time in my psychic projection of your garden ;)

And hey, we should talk about the conference some time - that's coming right up. Since I live here, if you don't know the city well, I'm happy to help out with planning and of course driving, if you don't plan to rent a car. (taxis are expensive here, so I can pick you up from the airport, if you'd like).

Actually, Fishwhistle and I are DRIVING (road trip whoo-hoo!) and we are probably staying with a friend, though come to think of it I need to email him, so I think we're good, but yes! let's do some pre-conference planning for fun times in That City Where You Live.

Oooo excellent - I would have been happy to drive you around, but this is a city with very poor public transport, so it's nice that you'll have that mobility. When do you plan to arrive?

Oh, okay!

If you were here you could come borrow our garden and produce ... and hey, you're not *that* far away ...

Ah-HAH! that is very good to know. I bet they'd be good sauteed with garlic chives, too, which we happen to have ...

Hmmm.

It's a common Asian veggie put into all sorts of dishes, although generally we saute it, or sometimes add it to soup. Garlic chives are a fab veggie too, they go particularly well with scrambled eggs. :D

Next time I'm headed that way, I'll let you know. Maybe you'll let me do some weeding? ;)
