A sequence of linkages that began with the sad discovery that I can only download from Rhapsody while in the U.S., and continued through the not terribly informative webpage of a semi-obscure downtown-NY 1980s band, ended with my finding the blog of my ex-wife. It's a pretty good blog, actually. She's still super-adjectival and prone to pointless dissing of lesbians, but otherwise, okay. She's certainly far better as a blogger than as a life partner.

So that was my day. How are you?

Gee, I have been trying to suppress my urge to Google old acquaintances after recent forays have revealed arrest records and dramatic suicides among people I used to be close to. I'm glad your discoveries were more felicitious.

Aw, jeeze, I'm sorry. Yeah, Elisabeth was much more the type to drive other people to crime and suicide than to do anything so dramatic herself, so I knew I was safe enough looking her up ....

Well there is also the one who now teaches history at a prep school in North Carolina.

Yeah, they all turned out pretty badly.

Hah! And I have an ex who teaches English at a prep school in Oregon!

I don't know what all this means, but it must mean something ...

To me it means that there are worse fates than to imagine being single for the rest of my life.

I suspect that almost *anyone* is better as a blogger than a life partner, because you're only in contact with the blog for a few minutes a week.

Last night I severed diplomatic relations with Friday Night Lights because I had a work event to go, and my TV reception is so poor I can barely watch things on broadcast, much less tape them. There were only a few people at the event I recognized, two of them being people I was at some pains to avoid.

Oh, I am sure that [livejournal.com profile] executrix is right: most of us are probably better in our blog incarnations, than as close RL associates. Certainly, I'm sure it's true in my case.

Also, am wondering what's wrong with me, that it never even occured to me to google old lovers.

*off to Google.com*

Nonsense. I can't eat your cooking on your blog, for starters.

I sing and cook much better in the blog version, than in RL, however.

Am now trying to track down Chuck via Google. There are (surprisingly) far too many people with that last name, however.

(with apologies to Lola)

No apologies necessary! Please! I am now wishing you luck on your Chuckish research, and contemplating looking up Harry ...

Ack. I shouldn't have looked. It seems that my former inamorta (sp?) (who was a leading light of the campus Maoist organization, back at Berkeley) is now on the Continental Airlines Board of Directors, and VP of a leading investment group.

Oh, how the mighty are fallen. Am very glad we didn't marry, after all.

Hee! Did I ever tell you the tale of The Guy I Went to Cuba With? The one I met while picking coffee for the Revolution in Nicaragua?

He's a Yale-to-Harvard corporate-lawyer-turned-investment-guru now, and when last seen, denied -- with considerable puzzlement that anyone would ever even think such a thing -- that he had ever been a socialist at all.

Um ... we do have oddly similar pasts, don't we?

It really, truly is eerie how our paths have run in parallel, through so many byways, twists, and turns.

And you know what? I'd bet money that my lawyer-turned-investment group VP former lover knows your former lover. At least by name. It seems to me that their paths have certain parallels, too.

(And I am resisting the urge to write RPS about what they get up to together in the clubhouse after.)

Man. I bet we could write wicked RPS about the two of them, if we put our heads together. I mean, we each know what our ex likes in bed.

And then mail a link to the posted story to each of them, from an anon yahoo account . . .

*shouldn't be having such thoughts. Esp. during Lent*

innamorato

It is the past tense (masculine) of the verb innamorare meaning "to fall in love with." Cognate with English enamor.

Too true. Well, present company excluded, and Fishwhistle too. But otherwise far better to be the in the presence of most people's blogs than most people.

I had to think about it a while -- Friday Night Lights? But yesterday was Wednesday -- but I did figure it out eventually: Friday Night Lights is one of them there tv shows, isn't it?

Ayuh. Originally on Monday but moved to Wednesday, for a certain Who's on First? quality.

I could tell my attachment to FNL* was slipping when I worked on a Buffy crossover and realized that Xander was much, much cleverer than any of the non-crossover denizens of the show.

*Hey, I bet your quondam Marxist watches it--NLF to FNL in one generation!

You don't even need the "+ blog" if you spell both her names correctly.

oooo found it!

Hmm. The ex-wife appears to be in two places at once, either eastern New York or Cincinnati. Perhaps she commutes? It's a unique enough name and the venues are such that I think both are her. Perhaps she moved recently... and curses upon you for making me spend an hour trying to find a photo on one of these sites... :)

Hmmm... I've googled ex-roommates but not ex-lovers. One of my prep school roommates seems to have taken some surprising turns, a quite provincial New Yorker born and raised who somehow ended up in Hawaii teaching Japanese in a high school, but another is, less surprisingly, doing obscure experimental theater in the Village and getting interestingly mixed reviews.

From: [identity profile] tofty.livejournal.com
Hi there!

Every now and then, someone recommends your journal to me, thinks we'd get along well together. Bow has done it (many times), for example, and Isis, and Amelia. And every time someone does, I come take a look at your journal and think, you know, she's right, I think we would get along but I am too intimidated to go first because I am just a weenie that way.

But tonight! Tonight I come to take my occasional look at your journal and discover that you have Hugo Largo music, Hugo Largo who I was pretty sure no one remembered besides me, Hugo Largo whom I love, and so even though I don't normally believe in signs or anything, I am going to take this as a sign and friend you.

Did I say Hi?
From: [identity profile] lolaraincoat.livejournal.com
Hello! Any friend of Hugo Largo is a friend of mine, I say. So -- hello!

Now that I've friended you you will see all the f'locked stuff and discover that I am a HUGE INCESSANT WHINGER but, um, sorry about that.

From: [identity profile] tofty.livejournal.com
And you will discover that my lj is terrifically me-me-me-ish, and that there are no more interesting bits hidden under friendslocks.

Don't you feel better now that we have admitted the worst?

(And if I'd done this two months ago, we could have met up in Atlanta for the Em El Ay, but oh well.)
From: [identity profile] lolaraincoat.livejournal.com
Are you Atlantean? or an Em El Ay-attendee? I was at the Ay Haitch Ay, actually, but some of my best friends are litcritters, so.
From: [identity profile] tofty.livejournal.com
I am neither/none of those things; I live an hour or so too far south to be an Atlantean. But that doesn't mean I don't welcome excuses to trek to the city and pretend to be cosmopolitan and enlightened!

On a more somber note, I am really sorry to hear about your grandmother. I lost mine a year or so ago, and it was quite rough. :/
